OUR PROFILE

1. OBJECTIVES?

Joy in learning is a prerequisite for life-long leaning.
Hermann-Lietz schools therefore have the objective of raising and supporting joy in learning in their students.
Hermann-Lietz schools are located at a tension field between tradition and modernity: in this sense, the schools see themselves as "homes of learning", offering care while promoting the willingness to perform and meeting changes.
Hermann-Lietz schools support their students in holistic thinking, responsible action and courageous contribution to creating their own future. Teaching social commitment and willingness to stand for the good of the community are important principles.
Lessons, education and community life at Hermann-Lietz schools are targeted at tolerant cooperation and aligned with a humanistic education objective based on a liberal democratic order.

2. RESIDENTS, EMPLOYEES, LEADING PRINCIPLES, LEGAL FORM

RESIDENTS

All students and employees living and working at Hermann-Lietz schools are residents and thus contribute to the home and school life.

EMPLOYEES

Employees identify with the objectives of Hermann Lietz schools. Therefore, Hermann-Lietz schools assume a special obligation to take care of the students. Employees need not only their technical qualifications, but also special skills in educational and interhuman respect. This includes continuous and systematic further training.

LEADING PRINCIPLES

The leading principles of the foundation are marked by cooperation and human valuation.

LEGAL FORM

The foundation Deutsche Landerziehungsheime Hermann-Lietz-Schulen is a foundation under private law. This means that the Hermann-Lietz schools are not profit-oriented but that all economic income will go towards improvement of the educational work.

3. PATHS

3.1 LIVING IN FAMILIES

8-12 students each live in boarding school families with their teachers. Different age groups learn to deal with each other in a cooperative and respectful manner. Conflict and everyday problems are dealt with together. Every resident learns to recognise his personal and social skills and develop them sensibly to take charge of his own life. In cooperation with the parents, the employees support this development process with lots of support while maintaining the required distance. Their educational work is based on trust, tolerance and the example function of the older person

3.2. LIFE IN HARMONY WITH NATURE

Hermann Lietz deliberately chose the location for his schools in the country, which is still very important. In our fast and consumer-oriented time, this island situation offers residents the possibility to find calmness in nature and to develop an ecological consciousness. They learn to sustainably use natural resources. Conscious reduction makes it easier to see what is essential and to live healthily.

3.3 HEALTHY LIVING

The school practices a lifestyle that is the basis for physical and mental health. This includes healthy nutrition and responsible use of luxuries. The objective is a harmony of body, mind and soil.

3.4. LINKING THE LESSON FIELDS

Future-oriented learning based on Lietz‘ ideas means linking school lessons, learning outside of lessons, guilds, chapels and practical work. At Hermann-Lietz schools, students receive learning offers and support according to the current  scientific insights; they actively contribute in creation of learning situations and are also supported in small learning groups. This is another manner in which joy in leaning and willingness to perform are facilitated.

3.5. LEARNING AT SCHOOL

Hermann-Lietz schools have a comprehensive educational offer in the areas of elementary school, Hauptschule, Realschule, Fachoberschule and Gymnasium, enabling students to take the corresponding state-certified exams. The schools convey the subject know-how as well as knowledge on background, cause and effect, complemented by economic and social interconnections. New media are used as interactive and innovative learning systems. In upper school, Hermann Lietz schools offer not only general education, but also special profiles: The economy advanced course in Bieberstein, Fachhochschule exams in the areas of information technology or the area of economy/administration/tourism at Haubinda. Students who do not want to start upper school right away can take the Biebersteiner "educational year" at the end of middle school, which has special requirements to learning with "head, heart and hand" while providing basic personal orientation.

3.6. MUSIC AND ART

Arts and music education is another important area for the  Hermann-Lietz schools. Students develop joy in creative design and improve their confidence in their creative skills. At the same time, sensual perception and experiencing skills are taught.

3.7. DIVERSE PHYSICAL EDUCATION OFFER

Physical education offers the required physical balance to mental and social effort. Sports activity conveys joy in motion and increases the willingness to perform, as well as providing students with an idea of their own skills. Fairness, team spirit, discipline and health are at the focus of sports. Therefore, all three Hermann-Lietz schools have an extraordinarily comprehensive and diverse sports offer.

3.8. GUILDS, PRACTICAL WORK AND SOCIAL COMMITMENT

Students experience application-oriented learning and practical implementation of their own creativity in the comprehensive offer of work groups, the so-called "Guilds". They get their name from the fact that they support crafts skills and talents. In the scope of "practical work", every individual learns to benefit the community and reliably assumes all work required in his or her area of life. To facilitate humanitarian thinking and action, students traditionally work both in their direct social environment and in more remote regions.

3.9. "CHAPELS" AND EDUCATION TO AN OPEN MIND

Chapels take place once a week; they are a forum for musical-cultural and economic-political education, promote the social life in the boarding schools, and facilitate communications skills. The developments in the world make clear that social thinking and action are of global importance. An understanding of different
cultural and living circles, political, economic and social interconnections is a central objective at Hermann-Lietz schools. This is taken up in the result "Biebersteiner talks".

Excursions in and outside of the country, as well as cooperation and exchange in the scope of international institutions and companies are other ways of creating connections around the world.
